Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman celebrated the entire human sensual experience within his poems. He is famous for rejecting traditional poetic forms in favour of free verse which embodied an  organic flow. Whitman wrote using the words of the common people, known as vernacular, and incorporated urban and rural themes.

I attempt this creative poem, with little to no prior experience of poetry writing. I like the way Whitman has broken the traditional rules of poetry, so hopefully my poem mimics that of Whitman.

I think I could turn and live with animals –

O! to be so naive and free,

I’d be a boundless bird, outstretched among the hillside,

Searching for endless possibilities,

Unrestricted by mundane routine – eat –  sleep –  work – repeat;

Or I’d bury within the mossy damp blades of grass on the sides of the river,

Hidden from the outside world,

I would uncover what I couldn’t and didn’t want to see previously,

I think I would be in love, living with animals, With returning to nature,

      To great Mother Earth,

      All beings together .
