Write a letter to your state parliamentarian telling him how your suburban environment is being effectively destroyed by eroding the natural landscape and putting high-rise apartments in the place of shrubs and trees.

To whom it may concern,
My position on the development of this high rise apartment is ironic, I both work and live in close proximity to the Sydney Adventist Hospital and my house is owned by the church. It is my rent money that would be directly funding the planned high rise block. However, I am wise enough to understand that this is a ludicrous idea. The planned estate of the 200 units is adjacent to the Adventist School which educates over 800 students from K-12. These students will not have access to grass to sit on, which should not be a luxury within a global city. Furthermore, on numerous occasions it has taken me 25 minutes to drive down my own street, due to a backlog of traffic!! I could have walked faster….
Within less than a 200m radius, there is a hospital providing care for more than 400 patients (incl. a large car park that is almost full every day), a school, a strip of shops and restaurants that cater for the needs of everyone who passes through, a media centre for the Seventh Day Adventist Church, a short cut road; The Comenara Parkway which allows tradies to shave their travel time by 20minutes to avoid the Pacific Highway/Pennant Hills Road AND there are new professional suites for specialists appointments – all on the same intersection. If thats not enough to confuse you on the geography of this one intersection, it is proposed to have more than 200 high rise units added to the same road!!! Its insane. Honestly, I should have swapped careers to be a town planner instead of a teacher.
Not to mention, the apartments will look directly into the school classrooms, isn’t there a privacy/child protection law that should prevent building an apartment block HIGHER than a school, where residents will have a direct line of sight into the little play space the children will have. It is an understatement to say that the local community is outraged and are continuing to advocate for the denial of this plan.
Despite the tall concrete buildings that impede on the land, from my house you can access a beautiful bushland, full of life and nature; brush turkeys and rabbits frequently wonder my garden and this environment is home to thousands of other creatures. I imagine if the unit proposal next to the school is denied, the houses that the church owns will be knocked down and rebuilt as high rises instead.
If you are confused by reading this, it is probably because the plan to build 200 units in such a densely populated area is confusing, you can sign the petition and access more information here.
Kind Regards.
Hi Caitlin!
I enjoyed reading your blog post. I really heard your argument for why it is not ethical to add high rise buildings where there are currently shrubs and trees. It was very interesting to read about the point in which that if the apartments were created they would be overlooking the schools. I would have to agree with you on this point. There should be a law that protects the children’s privacy in school. Town members should not be able to look into little children’s area of play. This was a great point to your argument that adds to the strength of it. I think your perspective on this issue is very well said. The points you made helps the reader become persuaded into your side of the argument. I also liked how you included a link for people to sign the petition. This ends your letter with the intention for others to be on the same side as you and it allows them to do something about how they feel. If you were to change anything I think I would say you could add in a comment to compare a positive of the apartments to all the negatives that you have discussed. This way it truly shows how the negatives trump the positives. Other than that I thought the response was very strong. Great work!!
